Hello from the Rules Committee. We are a pretty new committee, and have been meeting since August 2024. We have resolved several changes that our members have requested to incorporate into the Shooting Rules and Tournament Rules.
Part of what we have included in the rules now is a new, clear process for how they are amended, introducing a process to consult and seek your feedback prior to any new rules taking effect. Here’s how it will work:
- We have recommended a set of proposed changes to the Shooting Rules and Tournament Rules; the Board has approved our recommendation
- The proposed new rules are now available on the Archery NZ website. Please review these rules. We invite your feedback on these for at least a month from now; for these rules feedback is open until 31 January 2025.
- The Rules Committee will gather your feedback, review, and recommend any further changes to the Board to approve.
- We are aiming to have the final version of these rules approved and released by mid-February 2025. These will take effect in mid-March.
The changes we have proposed are summarised at the end of each document. Most changes are minor, consisting of word clarifications or stylistic changes to increase consistency and readability.
Please note a few specific areas of change:
- The new Amendment Procedure as briefly described above
- Full incorporation of the Novice and Development rules approved by the Board earlier in 2024 as part of both rules documents
- Renaming the Royle Hutton Memorial Shoot to the Hutton Memorial Shoot – we encourage Archery NZ to accommodate this name change on 6 February 2025 (even before the new rules take effect) to honour Royle and Alison Hutton
- Changing the compound U14 and Novice clout distance from 80 m to 120 m, which bridges between the U11 distance of 80 m and the U16 distance of 145 m. We intend for this distance change to be in place before the 2025 National Outdoor Tournament.
- Clarifications about how National Tournament matchplay combinations work, and to the wording around National Outdoor Tournament Champion of Champions awards, which reflect Peter Russell’s wisdom in administering these events – these reflect current administration practices and do not change anything about how the 2025 National Outdoor Tournament runs.
- Setting Clout Merit Pins to different values by division
Please take some time over the summer to read the proposed rules.
Review the proposed Shooting Rules v8.0.
Review the proposed Tournament Rules v3.0.
Please submit any feedback on these rules using this Google Form. We encourage you to be as specific as possible with your feedback so we can review it.
(Please note that feedback has now closed, so the form is no longer receiving responses.)
We are laying groundwork in these rules to accommodate bigger future changes in the next round in 2025, including the items below. Please don’t provide feedback on these yet!
- Considering how we can incorporate the World Archery U15 class from October 2025 onwards (after the Trans Tasman) – we want to have a much longer lead time for any changes in this area and expect to have this out later in 2025 for your feedback
- Incorporating a longbow shield competition to honour the recent donation of a longbow shield
- Considering a pending request to provide oversight of amendments to the Interclub Challenge competition rules while still enabling these to be nimbly adjusted by clubs each year
- Considering a pending request to essentially reverse 2021 changes to compound youth target face shooting rules
Thank you for your support.
Rules Committee including Meike Voigt (chair), Gordon Harris, Kelly Atkinson, Tahir Singh
